About the Music Director

Jesse Parker is the Founder and Music Director of VOICES XXI. He is also Artistic Director of the Chesapeake Chorale and Director of Music at Chevy Chase United Methodist Church.

Before creating VOICES XXI, he was the Associate Conductor of the Maryland Handel Festival and served on the faculties of the University of Maryland and Sweet Briar College. He has held conducting positions with the Festival Choral Society of Maryland, the Washington Conservatory of Music and at a number of churches in the region. He studied conducting with Paul Traver at the University of Maryland, where he earned a Doctorate in Music, and for more than 10 years assisted Dr. Traver in preparing the Maryland Chorus for performances with such conductors as Leonard Slatkin, Antal Dorati, Lorin Maazel, Georg Solti, Zubin Mehta, and John Nelson, among others. In 1998, Dr. Parker made his European debut conducting performances in Vienna, Austria. Over two seasons, he was the Interim Director of the University's choral ensembles with performances in New York and in College Park. In July of 2000, he was one of eight regional conductors to be selected by the National Symphony Orchestra to prepare a chorus for the premiere of Maury Yeston's "An American Cantata" conducted by Leonard Slatkin.
